Cake decorations...some advice

Getting married is one of the most important steps in many people's lives, and the wedding cake is one of the focal points of the reception.

When deciding on the design of your wedding cake, it can be helpful to know some of the common wedding cake decorations that you have to choose from. Wedding cake decorations allow a couple to add a lot of personality and individuality to their wedding cake.

One of the most popular wedding cake decorations is fresh flowers. A simple, white cake can be decorated with a wide variety of fresh cut flowers. The styles and colors of the flowers used as your wedding cake decorations can be matched to the bride's bouquet and the colors of the wedding party.

Discuss the flowers you plan to use with your bakery ahead of time. If you will be using fresh flowers as your wedding cake decorations, give the florist and baker at least two weeks notice so that they have time to order the flowers. Also, make sure to use a florist familiar with cake decoration, as some flowers are poisonous and should not be used on food. 

If you're having the cake made by a bakery or supermarket, a picture of her when she was little would be nice and not tacky. I don't like that "Over the Hill" stuff. You could also see if you can find something with a character she loved as a child (Barbie, Raggedy Ann etc.).

Unique cake decorations?

what are some very unique ways to decorate a photo cake or Fototorten? Not just writing something with frosting, but something very unique and creative.

For example, you might cover the entire cake (preferably a dome shaped cake) with spiky chrysanthemum petals. Add a few (paper) leave on the edge of the plate (stick 'em out, over the edge). You could bake a domed cake in a stainless mixing bowl, or bake two layers, choose the one with the highest dome, then trim the *other one* flat. Use the flat one on bottom, put the rounded one with the round up.

Or ice the top yellow or pink. Build a collar, with a ruffly top edge, out of fondant, or white choc. Wrap the collar around the entire side of the cake, with the ruffle sticking up. Make 5-7 petals for the same stuff as the ruffle, and stick them under the edge of the cake, again, sticking over the edge of the plate. Voila! A big daffodil.

If you have a Disney store near you or Toys r' us, go there, they should have them. The Disney store online has them, so I would think they'd have them in store. Toys r' us I would think would have them being she's so popular.

cvs pharmacy had them this weekend when i bought some for my sister's birthday party! they sell out quickly. there were only a few items remaining.

Cuban theme cake decorations?

How about the national flag? You could put the flag in the center and little decorations of things that Cuba is famous for such as cigars, baseball, bongos, guayaberas (Cuban shirts)...

A traditional Cuban scene is of a "choza", or small, thatched hut in the countryside, surrounded by palm trees. You could add a Cuban flag to it, too.

Which paste to use for cake decoration?

I teach myself cake decorating. When you place some cake decorations similar to Kuchendekoration on the sugarpasted cake such as some shapes with patchwork cutters or frills, do you use Mexican paste or sugarpaste with some gum tragacanth to make those decorating items? Or something else?

Im self taught as well, I use sugar paste. I find it works better with the humid conditions we get in Michigan.
